René Smoorenburg's still lifes stand in the tradition of Dutch Old Masters. In the spirit of the fijnschilders of the Dutch Golden Age, René paints his works with great care and precision. Nevertheless, he imbues his paintings with a contemporary character for which he uses his recognisable signature style.
In his work, René Smoorenburg strives to highlight the beauty of the every day object. In contrast to the Golden Age paintings, in which valuable objects and showpieces were shown in all their glory, René finds beauty not in perfection but in used and worn objects. Even the smallest imperfections are rended in great detail in order to attract the attention of the viewer. The visible traces of the past and the signs of the past make the objects intruiging.
